About the Role
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a technical anchor across our web and backend engineering teams. This role goes beyond writing code; you will shape how we build, influence architecture decisions across products, and elevate the engineers around you. You’ll operate at the intersection of deep technical expertise and organizational leadership, helping define standards, remove systemic blockers, and drive outcomes that span team boundaries.
Our web platform and backend services are built across JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, and Go, running on AWS with containerized workloads on Kubernetes. These services power our consumer apps, the web experiences around Wave Browser, and the data and identity systems shared across our product portfolio. We care less about mastery of any single language and far more about your ability to reason through complexity, design systems that scale, and recognize when a shortcut today becomes a liability tomorrow.
What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership
- Own and drive architecture decisions for complex, cross-cutting web and backend systems, including APIs, services, and shared data platforms
- Define and enforce engineering standards: patterns, anti-patterns, code quality, API design, and service boundaries
- Conduct architecture and design reviews and provide high-signal feedback across teams
- Raise the bar on reliability, observability, performance, and security across our production services
- Identify and resolve technical debt before it compounds
Organizational Impact
- Partner with engineering managers and team leads to unblock teams and improve delivery velocity
- Mentor and grow senior engineers; actively invest in the technical depth of the org
- Bridge the gap between teams by surfacing dependencies, aligning on shared infrastructure and services, and reducing duplication
- Contribute to hiring by defining bar-raising interview criteria and participating in technical evaluations
Strategic Influence
- Translate business goals into technical strategy and vice versa
- Participate in roadmap planning with a long-horizon view on scalability, maintainability, cost, and risk
- Advocate for platform investments that pay dividends across multiple products
- Communicate technical direction clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Who You Are
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated growth into senior or staff-level scope
- Deep experience designing and operating distributed web services and APIs at scale
- Deep understanding of software design patterns and anti-patterns; knowing not just what to build, but what to avoid and why
- Strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, and systems design, including data modeling, caching, and event-driven and message/event bus architectures
- Experience driving architecture across multiple teams or services
- Ability to navigate and contribute across polyglot architectures; comfortable reasoning about tradeoffs across languages and runtimes, and capable of making sound technical decisions without requiring a single-stack rewrite
- Proven ability to influence without authority and lead through technical credibility
- Production fluency in at least one of TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js), C# (.NET), or Go, and comfort working in the others
- Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containers, and Kubernetes
- Proficiency with Git, CI/CD, and collaborative development workflows
Preferred Skills
- Experience with AWS services such as EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, or RDS
- Experience designing event bus or pub/sub systems (e.g., Kafka, EventBridge, or similar) that decouple services across teams
- Experience with observability and incident tooling (logging, metrics, tracing, on-call practices)
- Experience building identity, user profile, analytics, or messaging/engagement platforms
- Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (React or similar) and web performance
- Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform or similar)
- Exposure to browser technology or the Chromium codebase is a plus, but not required
